Your Tap Water Contains More Microplastics Than It Did Five Years Ago — Here Is Why

This one is a little uncomfortable to think about, but it is worth knowing.

Testing carried out across municipal water supplies in various parts of Europe and North America over the past few years has shown a measurable increase in microplastic particles compared to samples taken half a decade earlier. The increase varies by region, but in some areas researchers are reporting concentrations two to three times higher than previous readings.

The sources are varied — degrading pipe infrastructure, atmospheric deposition, and the breakdown of plastic waste in water catchment areas all appear to be contributing factors. Standard filtration systems used in most municipal supplies were not designed with microplastics in mind, and upgrading them is both technically complex and expensive.

Nobody is suggesting the current levels represent an immediate health crisis. But the trend line is moving in one direction, and the long term effects of chronic low level microplastic ingestion remain genuinely uncertain.
