The Magnetic North Pole Is Moving Faster Than at Any Point in Recorded History

Most people know the magnetic north pole moves. What fewer people realise is how fast it has been shifting recently — and what that might mean for the systems we rely on every day.

Over the past three decades, the pole has been drifting from northern Canada toward Siberia at a rate that has accelerated significantly since the early 2000s. Recent tracking data suggests it is now moving at close to 55 kilometres per year — nearly four times the average rate recorded throughout most of the 20th century.

Navigation systems, aviation routes, and military positioning technology all depend on accurate magnetic pole data. Updates that used to be issued every five years now need to happen annually just to keep pace.

Scientists have various theories. None of them are particularly reassuring.
