The world is getting brighter at night. That much is measurable. What is less well understood is the cumulative effect this is having on the natural systems that evolved over millions of years in genuine darkness.
Data compiled from satellite observations and ground based monitoring stations suggests that artificial light at night has increased by approximately 27% globally since 2011. The expansion is most pronounced in developing economies undergoing rapid urbanisation, but established urban centres in Europe and North America are also contributing significantly.
The ecological implications are broad. Migratory birds that navigate by starlight are showing altered flight patterns. Insect populations — already under pressure from multiple directions — are being drawn toward artificial light sources in ways that disrupt pollination cycles. Marine ecosystems near coastlines are experiencing changes in the behaviour of species that rely on lunar light cycles for reproduction timing.
The night sky, it turns out, was doing a lot of work that we never thought to measure until it started to disappear.
