I know what you're thinking. Sand? Really? The planet is covered in the stuff.

Except it turns out the specific type of sand we actually need — coarse, angular, the kind used in concrete and glass manufacturing — is genuinely becoming scarce in ways that most people aren't aware of. Desert sand is too smooth and fine to be useful industrially, which means the world relies on riverbeds, coastlines, and quarries for the good stuff.

And we're going through it at a rate that's starting to worry people in construction, urban planning, and materials science. Some researchers tracking global extraction rates now estimate that accessible reserves of usable sand in certain regions could be significantly depleted within the next two to three decades if current consumption patterns continue.
