Okay so this one genuinely surprised me when I first came across it.
You know how in certain photographs taken near the poles, the sky looks almost navy blue even in the middle of the night? Most people assume it's just a camera thing — long exposure, colour correction, whatever. But apparently it's not.
There's a phenomenon that researchers have been studying called residual atmospheric scattering, where sunlight bouncing off ice sheets at certain angles continues to scatter blue wavelengths through the upper atmosphere long after sunset. The effect is subtle to the naked eye but measurable — and it's apparently been getting stronger as polar ice coverage changes.
It's one of those things that sounds obvious in hindsight but nobody really talks about. Nature doing its quiet, complicated thing while we're all busy looking at our phones.
