A growing body of research is pointing to a significant and largely underreported shift in soil electrical conductivity levels across Northern and Central Europe.
Between 2018 and 2024, average conductivity readings in agricultural regions of Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands rose by an estimated 18-23%, according to compiled field data from independent agricultural monitoring groups. The shift correlates with changes in rainfall distribution, increased use of certain fertiliser compounds, and what some researchers describe as a fundamental change in microbial soil composition.
Why does this matter? Soil conductivity affects how efficiently plants absorb water and nutrients. Changes at this scale, sustained over several years, have measurable knock-on effects for crop yields, root development, and long term food security.
The numbers haven't made headlines. But among those working in agricultural science, they're being taken very seriously.
