Deep Ocean Temperatures at 3,000 Metres Have Risen by 0.4°C Since 2015 — Researchers Are Puzzled

Deep ocean monitoring has never been a particularly glamorous field. But a quiet shift in the data collected from sensors stationed at depths of around 3,000 metres across the Atlantic and Pacific basins is starting to attract serious attention.

Between 2015 and 2023, average temperatures at that depth rose by approximately 0.4 degrees Celsius across multiple monitoring points. That may sound insignificant, but at those depths, even fractional changes carry enormous implications for deep sea currents, pressure systems, and the behaviour of methane hydrates sitting on the ocean floor.

What makes this particularly interesting is the speed of the change. Historical data suggests shifts of this magnitude typically unfold over centuries, not years. Nobody is claiming to have a definitive explanation yet. But the monitoring continues, quietly, far below the surface.
